Born in 1936, Trevor Edmands studied at Leeds College of Art in the 1960s and was Senior Lecturer at Trinity & All Saints College in the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. After a series of solo exhibitions in university galleries in Leeds, Sheffield, Durham and Edinburgh, Trevor was in 1984 given a major, six week solo exhibition in Leeds City Art Gallery under the auspices of the Arts and Leisure Committee of Leeds City Council.
He has since exhibited widely in the UK, Europe and in USA with key exhibitions being held in London, Cincinatti, Germany and Italy.
His work is characterised by immense variety and remarkable inventiveness. Trevor Edmands is both a painter and a sculptor and whilst many of his works can be classified simply as 'painting' or 'sculpture', many others either introduce sculptural elements into a painting or provide a painted setting for sculpture, to the point where demarcation lines blur or disappear altogether.
The paintings range from the almost pure abstract, to the almost totally figurative and from some works with virtually a monochrome approach to others in which the richness of colour is reminiscent of medieval stained glass. Trevor Edmands' use of colour is indeed striking. Some paintings appear to build harmonies of colour with the effect of symphonic music, whilst in others colour combinations which seem to break all the rules somehow work perfectly.
