Joash Woodrow
Paintings and drawings of his native city, Leeds, by the visionary British artist Joash Woodrow (1927-2006) more
Joash Woodrow (1927 - 2006)was a visionary, semi reclusive artist whose output of several thousand paintings and drawings was discovered only towards the end of his life - filling a modest suburban house in Leeds to the brim. After studying at the Royal College of Art in the 1950s, he retreated to live and work in the family home, emabarking on a lifetime's artistic endeavour with almost hermetic dedication and astonishing perseverance. The works of this hitherto unknown, enigmatic, culturally erudite artsist were revealed for the first time in the early 2000s through a series of exhibitions, to great critical acclaim. The writer Glyn Hughes declared that some of Joash Woodrow's 'output is likely to stand with the best of English art of the past century'.
