Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 and was to become the most famous, versatile, prolific and influential artist of the 20th Century. more
The son of a painting and drawing master, he was remarkably precocious, mastering academic draughtsmanship when still a child. By the 1920s Picasso had established himself as a world famous painter and from that time on his reputation and status continued to grow. It is our good fortune that Picasso had such a great love of printmaking. By the time he died in 1973 he had produced a substantial body of original etchings, lithographs and linocuts, which rank with the greatest prints of the 20th Century.

Untitled
(Les Cavaliers D'Ombre)
Engraving, 1954. Edition Size: 84 Signed in the plate. Extremely rare etching after Picasso. Published in 1954 by J. Foret as his first venture into the Livre d'artist market. Because the illustrations were by Picasso, the book sold out very quickly and has become a scarce collector's item. Les Cavaliers d'ombre is a book of poems by Genevieve Laporte. Seven poems are illustrated with a Picasso drawing etched on copper by Georges Betemps and signed by Picasso in the plate. The illustrations do not appear to have any connection with the text. At the time the illustrations were made Picasso was having a secret love affair with Genevieve Laporte despite being more than fifty years her senior. The nude studies are of Picasso's mistress.
